The Darwin Festival
13-30 August 2009
On Christmas Eve, 1974 Cyclone Tracey left Australia’s northernmost city of Darwin an unwelcome gift of death and destruction. So terrible was the toll that abandoning the city site was considered. Five years later, in 1979, the first annual Bougainvillea Festival was held to celebrate the success of the community in rebuilding. Originally a floral festival to promote the beautification of the rebuilt city, over subsequent years the focus shifted toward the celebration of multicultural arts and community. The Bougainvillea Festival was renamed in 1996 “The Darwin Festival”.
