On the first Tuesday of November in Melbourne, Australia, the world’s most famous horse race is held annually at Flemington racecourse by the Victoria Racing Club. This has become a huge event for all Australians and visitors from all over the world since 1861. The race is for three-year-old thoroughbred horses, over 3,200 meters. Race day became a public holiday in Victoria in 1877. Hundreds of thousands of spectators gather at the track in excited anticipation of the finish.  Let’s not forget about the prizes for Australia’s richest horse-race. In 2008, the owner of the winning horse received AUD$5.5 million. The 18 carat gold cup itself is valued at AUD$125,000.

Another highlight is the high fashion indeed, The Melbourne Cup is arguably, the most important event on the Australian fashion calendar. “Myer Fashions on the Field” was launched by the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) in 1962 and has become the most popular outdoor fashion event in Australia. The purpose of the event is to attract a more women to the race, in that it has been a raging success.  Due to the great success of the event, it has also become a national fashion competition between the states of Australia. Large cash prizes are awarded in many categories including, best dressed man and best dressed woman.
