The baht is the currency of Thailand. It is subdivided into 100 satang. Though satang are not common in pricing, they are used by some retailers for tax calculations and visitors often end up with this small strange coin that is of nearly no value. There are 2 satang coins in circulation, the 25 satang and 50 satang. 50 satang is one-half of one baht and worth a little more than one U.S. penny.

Aside from the satang coins there are also coins for 1 baht, 2 baht, 5 baht, and 10 baht in common circulation. It takes a trained eye to readily spot the difference between a 1 and a 2 baht coin! The others are however no problem. The 10 baht coin in particular is very easily identified; being made of 2 different alloys, gold colored in the center and silver colored on the outer portion of the coin.

Thai baht bank notes are quite easy to distinguish, with a little practice. There are 5 notes in common circulation the green 20 baht note; the blue 50 baht note, the red 100 baht note; the purple 500 baht note; and the brown 1000 baht note.

A baht is also a unit of weight for gold and is commonly used in jewelers and goldsmiths in Thailand. 1 baht = 15.244 grams (used for raw’ gold or bullion) and, in the case of jewelry, 1 baht should be 15.16 grams or more.
